The three main eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating. These all manifest themselves in different ways, although the underlying theme is the same.

Nearly a quarter of teenage girls admit to starving themselves for 24 hour periods, making themselves sick or taking laxatives to control their weight.

The main characteristics of sufferers are perfectionism, over achievement, low self esteem and a need to please others, along with a combination of emotional, physical and social triggers. Most disorders are treatable and many sufferers go on to lead normal lives involving food.
